Weekly Classes
starting September 2023

Feng Yun has taught weekly classes, workshops, and private lessons for more than twenty years, with a full range of students from beginners to national champions. Starting in September 2023, Feng Yun again will be teaching weekly weiqi (go) classes online using web-based tools such as Zoom and various go servers. In taking advantage of contemporary technology, she has found that many of the same objectives can be achieved online as in person, and indeed, some activities such as game reviews are better online.

Classes comprise lectures, problem solving, practice games, and game reviews. All classes are taught live and interactively, where students can ask questions and participate in discussions; Feng Yun monitors practice games in real time and reviews them in class. Problem solving is important for everyone to improve pattern recognition and playing skills, including logical thinking and accurate calculation of variations, and homework problems will be assigned.

Classes are taught at three different levels.

Level 1 Beginner - Students who are just starting to play weiqi need step-by-step instruction. Level 1 classes focus on fundamentals, terminology, problem solving, basic opening principles, and how to complete games without assistance. Most students will start on a small board (9x9 or 13x13) and work their way up to the regulation 19x19 board.
Level 2 Intermediate - At level 2, students are expected to know some weiqi terminology and basic patterns of play; having experience playing on a 19x19 board is a prerequisite. Openings are studied to gain a deeper understanding of how experts play, and regular problem solving builds logical thinking habits. Students play practice games and selected games are reviewed by the teacher for everyone in the class.
Level 3 Advanced - Level 3 is for students who have more substantial playing experience, and likely would be rated American 9 kyu or higher. Class material is more challenging than in Level 2, including more in depth analyses of openings, and creative ideas for whole board play. These classes lay a foundation for life long learning and enjoyment of the game. Very strong players, American 4 dan and higher, may be accepted, but these students should also consider private lessons.

Students registered at one level can be promoted to the next level at any time; Feng Yun will recommend when. If you are not sure which level would be best for you, then please ask Feng Yun for advice. One-on-one private lessons with Feng Yun are also available for players at all levels.

All classes include a paid subscription to 101weiqi.com which is used in the classes to assign homework, including solving problems and playing games with appropriate AIs. Feng Yun closely monitors student activities on these accounts, assessing progress and making adjustments.

Class times are as follows. All times are EDT/EST (New York).

Level 1 Friday 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Level 2 Sunday 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
